Shakespeare's Songbook Shakespeare's plays have been universally beloved, but a crucial element has usually been missing from their production: the music. Few people are even aware that most of the plays were originally supplied with musical interludes--ballads, rounds, drinking songs, lyric music night and instrumental compositions--used to comment on the action, stress a character trait, or evoke a mood. Musicologist Ross W.
